Candidates for ward office

Ward 1

Candidates for chair, ward 1

  • James Martinez

Why are you running? To represent my Ward and our residents.

  • Susan K. Herrera

Why are you running? As the elected Democratic Representative from District 41, I want to work to have an active and vibrant Democratic County Committee that includes all interested Democrats that want to take an active part in local, state and national elections. I think we need a Democratic county committee that is welcoming, has monthly activities discussing key central issues. I want to be part of a Democratic County Committee that works together to build and expand the democratic party in Rio Arriba. We need to attract young Democrats, first time voters and reach out to high school and college students who would like to be part of our Democratic party. Democratic events should be a time where we meet with old friends and meet new friends, a place where you learn something, and a place where we can all discuss how we can improve our local, state and national politics. It should be a committee where everybody knows your name, a meeting that you look forward to, and a meeting that reinforces your commitment to a vital democracy.

In the past I’ve served as lieutenant governor, treasurer, interpreter and a Tribal Council member for Santa Clara Pueblo. I also worked for Santa Clara for almost 10 years on land and water rights. Why are you running? I’ve lived in La Mesilla for twenty years; I would like the Democratic Party to be more visible and more useful here. Since November 2016 I have been looking for ways to limit the damage done to our country by the man elected president then, to repair some of the damage he did, and to build our country back, better. In 2019 I became a precinct chair mostly by accident: two La Mesilla voters attended the county convention and I drew the short straw. I have spent the last two years learning about how the party organization works and trying to do my part in the county central committee, and I hope that I am now in a better position to work effectively as a precinct chair. I want three things for our party, for our county and state, for our country: Respect nature; respect science; respect each other. That starts at the precinct level. We need open, constructive discussion of issues, we need to communicate with voters now alienated from the party in order to stop the Republican inroads in La Mesilla, and we need to prepare for November 2022.

  • Candidates for precinct vice-chair:
    • John DePaula

    • Debbie Rodella

    • Saraswati Kaur Khalsa

Why are you running? I have lived in La Mesilla for 15 years and raised three children here. I believe the Democratic Party should be representative of all parts of the community and that policies adopted should reflect the values and priorities of our local community. Those of us who live here value our land and our water, and understand our shared reliance on the earth for life. We value strong communities that support each other, provide for the basic needs of all people, and the unique freedoms that a strong, democratic society provides. These values and freedoms cannot be compromised on the altar of corporate profit for short term economic gains or the or the benefit of a few over the many. We must take the long view, preserving our land, our water and our democratic values for our children, and their children, and beyond.

Why are you running? Democrats pushed through a sweeping expansion of federal voting rights on Wednesday March 3, 2021, over unified Republican opposition. The day before, a Republican lawyer argued before the Supreme Court that the Republican party needs voter suppression laws that disproportionately impact voters of color in order to compete with Democrats. But, the fight to stop voter suppression isn’t just limited to Washington. I am committed to advancing racial, gender, LGBTQ, disability justice and indigenous sovereignty, and lobbying to undo racist voting laws at the NM Legislature. I respectfully ask for ask for your vote of confidence. Thank you.

Why are you running? I am running for precinct chair because I am interested in bringing cultural diversity and awareness to the elected positions in the city of Espanola. There is a need for change in leadership for the citizens and I am that person. I come with the leadership experience of being chairperson of the largest LD in the congressional district that put a blue dot on a red state in 2 elections in Nebraska. I was also a delegate to 2012 Democratic National Convention.

Why are you running? I am running for County Chair because I believe our best days are ahead of us and we must rebuild what we have lost as a county Democratic Party.

The days of disarray and division must stop.

I have worked tirelessly for over two decades to elect Democrats in Rio Arriba County and statewide. I served as co-chair for then Attorney General Tom Udall’s Campaign for the US Congress (1999) and recently as a pivotal member of Sen. Leo Jaramillo and Rep. Roger Montoya’s successful campaigns.

Together, I will ensure we have candidates that uphold our strong Democratic and progressive tenets. I will work to remove fear and intimidation from our local elections. I will foster collaboration, communication, advocacy, acceptance and action. I will work to give voice to those without and welcome new voices– our Native American pueblos and the Jicarilla Apache Nation, LGBTQ, Sikh community, minorities, our youth and young adults, and every other marginalized person– under a new Democratic tent.

I will stand strong with the people of this beautiful community and work tirelessly to build a party that recognizes our vast diversity and builds a foundation for younger Democrats who will one day lead this party.

Why are you running? I am both honored and humbled by the overwhelming support that I have received by Democrats asking me to seek re-election as Chair of the DPRAC. In the last 2 years we have seen the party grow in diversity and we met the challenges that kept our county BLUE! We know that when we volunteer, we don’t do so for popularity or fame but to get Democrats elected. As your DPRAC Chair, I will:

      • build upon our foundation of inclusiveness, support and promote members of our diverse community to establish caucuses that work collectively with others across the state
      • create and sustain a quarterly newsletter
      • work with precinct and wards to increase new voter registration projects
      • lead the fight to establish a fair redistricting plan for our county
      • continue our monthly CCC meetings by virtual means and in person when COVID restrictions are lifted
      • most importantly, mobilize to elect Democrats to office

Like many of you, my roots are in Northern New Mexico. My work experience as an elected official with the Espanola Public Schools Board of Education, a member of the DPNM DPNM Platform Committee, working along side with now Congresswoman Deb Holland, a Deputy Director for now Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Bureau Chief (overseeing over 3 million in state and federal funds), a Director of a non-profit/free clinic in Santa Fe, and as a a board member of the Santa Fe/Del Norte (now regionally now regionally combined) Boys and Girls Club, and as a member of the DPNM SCC, I will continue to bring voters to the table to keep us RIO ARRIBA STRONG!
